Dr. Gunkel joined T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom (DT), in 1999. Now he is with the Strategy & Architecture department attributed to the DT headquarter. He is responsible for high-speed optical transport technology and future network architectures within the entire DT group. Currently he cares for the near-future optical transport network (OTN) design, ROADM functionalities and architectures as well as their operational impacts. Especially, he leads DT-internal activities on how to evolve the existing base of already installed OTN equipment towards a flexible all-optical L1/L2 network capable to transport, switch and groom various high-bitrate traffic types. He was involved in various European and national founded research projects over the last years (amongst others Nobel, Nobel-II, Diconet, KomNet, Eibone, MultiTeraNet), partly leading the DT contributing parts.
